SM Sri KL's Open Day and Swimming Gala

 SM SRI KL OPEN DAY
15 July 2006

On the 15th of Jully 2006, SM Sri Kuala Lumpur held their annual Open Day. The event was held from 9.00am til 4.00pm. The aim of the event was to publicize the school to the public, and to attract students who were interested in joining the school, and not to mention showing the public all that the school was worth. We took this opportunity and volunteered to be in charge of the food testing experiments in the Biology Laboratory, as we knew that this would improve the relationship and create a closer bond between our fellow Leos as well as the incoming Board of Directors. Leo Chong Yi Feng, the organizing chairperson of the project, and 10 other Leo members, took over the booth.

On the day, we were required to explain to the visitors what food products contain protein, starch or glucose. The booth was attended by two Leos every one-hour interval. even though the Open Day wasn't well attended, but our Leos did the best for the school to encourage enrollment of the visitors' kids to our school.

The Leos who attended the Open Day were as follows:
1. Leo Chong Yi Feng [Organizing Chairperson]
2. Leo Kristin Choo [Assistant Organizing Chairperson]
3. Leo Samantha Ong
4. Leo Yeo Sher Lin
5. Leo Nicole Tan
6. Leo Leaw Theng Seng
7. Leo Teh Tian Ji
8. Leo Cheryl Leong
9. Leo Michelle Wong
10. Leo Ariel Ooi
11. Leo Daniel Moh

Since Open Day was from 9am to 4pm, not many Leos were needed to accomplish this school service project. At the end of the day, the one hour spent together with our partners made us realizethat working together with our partner efficiently, isn't that bad after all, and of course, helping us understand our Biology subject better while providing service to the school.

Hats off to all the Leo members that took part and helped out in the project. =]

SM SRI KL SWIMMING GALA
12 August 2006

The objective of having the Swimming Gala Sale was to raise funds for any upcaoming projects in the near future. We sold nuggets, squid balls, and mango and orange cordial and made a good amount of money. Our only competition was the school's canteen, but it did not bring our spirits down. The stall attracted both the public and the swimmers.

5 Leo members attended the Gala, namely Leo Chong Yi Feng [OC], Leo Sofia Goh [AOC], Leo Kristin Choo, Leo Yeo Sher Lin and Leo Diyana.

Kudos to the Leos who attended and made the day a successful one, even though some had to divide their time to compete and to help out.

ENGLISH DEPT

At around 10 am, the Leos and orphans were divided into a Leo-buddy partner scheme, allowing the Leos to take responsibility over a buddy each. The kids, however, also had some of their own ideas in mind, and some of them refused to follow their earlier allocated partners. Therefore, some Leos ended with 2 kids, whereas some kids ended up with 2 Leos. Nevertheless, ‘the show must go on’ as they say, and we started off with a session of reading and interaction. The kids were Chinese educated and this caused a language barrier between the mainstream English educated Leos and them. However, it did not stop any of us from summoning whatever Chinese vocabulary we have, be it fluent or not, to communicate and teach them how to read English. The Leos taught the children to read a poem entitled ‘My Dog Chewed Up My Homework’. The younger ones were faster in learning how to read the 3-paragraph long poem, and the Leos ‘rewarded’ them with a go at the games in their handphones. The older ones were more fascinated with the colourful books we brought for them, and the boys were really into the comics. After that, we played ‘Simon Says’. Though not very successful, we did manage to overcome some language-difficulties. We held a Spelling Bee after that, which really brought out the competitive side in the kids. The kids could be seen rushing in front, with their hands stuck up in the air, shouting out answers. Although it didn’t really teach the kids how to spell (the Leos were whispering the answers in their ears), the kids definitely had some good fun. After a round or 2 of spelling, we moved on to play Charades. We didn’t play according to the rules, as in the normal Charades, but we played it a little differently. We opened the drawing board to the floor, and the first one with their hands up and the right answer would win. This showed us the drawing skills of the children, which was simple yet nice. Once again, the competitive streak in the kids showed, making the atmosphere joyous and lively. We had a spot of help from 2 SMK Batu 8 Leos, Leo Vincent and Leo Alex, who seemed to have a knack for working with hyperactive children. The game ended about half-an-hour later, and then the kids were dispersed, leaving them to feast on the mountains of sweets they won and to toss around the balloons they blew. All in all, the day was a success although is differed from the original plan. We’re glad we had a chance to bring the joys of English into these little kids’ lives, and also a golden opportunity to see life on ‘the other side’. We all made a friend or 2, and we’ve all been shown the true meaning of being lucky, and being thankful for what we have everytime we wake up to a brand new day.
